Engine dies when headlights are turned on??

Ok I have a VERY weird problem, after the truck has sat with the headlights off for a while (a couple hours) I start the engine & then turn the lights on & the engine dies. It will even do it some times going down the road. The engine will fire right back up. Only does it with the headlights not park or brake lights. After doing it a couple of times everything is fine .
A year or so ago I upgraded the headlights to HID's, they are direct replacements for the factory lights (ballasts plug right into the factory headlight plug) & the ballasts are located up by the headlights away from any wire harness'.

My best guess is that when cold the head light wiring is back feeding into the engine controls some where , any ideas would be VERY appreciated.

Tomorrow morning I am going to try swapping the stock headlights back in & see if the HID's are the issue. But I don't see how they could be.

Do you have a big voltage drop when you turn on the HID's

No volt drop that I can tell, when it does it while driving, the radio, gauge lights,CB all seem fine. The headlights stay on & bright.
I have an extra headlight switch & will give that a try after I swap out the HID's.

If you have ever had an CPS go out on you that is what it is like. Only it starts right back up, and is definitely caused by the act of turning on the headlights.

I shared with Bob, Nick's dad the solution from Jody that fixed both the hid headlight issue and the hid foglight issue on mine. If they are from Retro-solutions or one like them take the powering from the passenger side battery. The PCM feeds from the drivers side. At the same time make sure you have a good ground for the ballasts. These 2 things, completed a couple of months ago eliminated the problem on my truck as well as another one I know of.

The HIDs can cause a interference in the electrical system and the trucks with chips are very susceptible to this. I know of trucks with 3 different "brands" of tuners that share this malady.

I've seen the headlights kill a 460 engine in an older truck. A loose ground was the culprit there (that we found very quickly by accident). Sounds like the HID kit has something to do with it, but checking grounds or even adding additional grounds sounds like a good place to start.

I had experimented with the grounding side, it wasn't until I moved the power for the hid ballasts did the issue go away.

I had the same issue. Grounding the ballasts greatly reduced the problem.
