This is a first post, and I'm new to most of this type of stuff, but I enjoy learning and figuring out how to reslove/fix problems.
I have a dana 60 rear axel froma 79 Ford that is for offroad use. I took it out the other day and the next day I noticed that there was some oil that leaked out of the rear axel vent. Was this caused by temperatures getting to hot? Did I blow a seal? Not sure what would cause this or if this is a good thing if the temp got to hot? Any help is appricated.
Does your vent have a hose or just a splash cap attached to it?
There's usually no check valve on that vent, so it is possible for the vent to leak under various conditions. Usually it's a combination of overfilling the lube, heat from operations, and going over really rough terrain.
If the vent has just a cap, you want to might modify it by replacing it with a hose (rubber fuel line) and run it with a big loop up into some part of the chassis where water can't splash into it, like a long snorkel. Make the loop long enough to accommodate your suspension travel. That's how Ford did it on my van. It started leaking when the hose got old, hard, and cracked, so I recently replaced it. It was leaking even though I don't go off-roading with it.
It has a tube that runs up to the frame but I probably should get a longer one, there was some hard climbs etc. on the trail. It sounds like I may have just worked it a little bit hard and the heat or the positions of the axel as I was climbing on and over obstacles is the culprit. Thanks I was hoping this was not going to require a fix, other than I need a longer hose to fit my lift.
