Hello. This is my first forum ever. My 2004 6.0 quit running while going down hill bulling a 28 ft travel trailer. Got to the bottom of hill and truck was dead. my code reader says "misfire". I have insatalled two new batteries, fuel filters, cam sensor and crankshaft sensor. I'm now suspecting a fuel issue. With ignition on the fuel pump runs for about 20 seconds. I have cycled the ignition on and off about ten times then taken the secondayr fuel filter cap off and there hardly any fuel in it. with the cap off it will fill with the ignition turned on. reinstall the cap and crank the engine a few times and its almost empty again. I dont have a fuel pressure guage to check the fuel pump. So, I dont know if the pump is weak or i have a regulator problem. I may not even be going in the right direction. Is this something anybody has seen? I really don't want to throw another part at it. Oh, the FICM voltage is good and the oil pressure guage reads pressure during a long crank. Any advive will be greatly appreciated. If i have posted this in the wrong area i apologize.
hmm... I forget the name of the thing as I never have had a 6.0... but if you look in this section or the 6.0 section under diesel motors, I beleive I have read some where that there is an oil pressure mechanism that fires the injectors on the 6.0... could be that thing. Also I'm not new to diesels... Were the fuel filters primed correctly? any air in the line will cause big headaches. I'll take a look to see if I can find out what the oil pump injector firing this is called... maybe HEIU... let me check on that for sure before I give ya my work on that.
Welcome to FTE...
You will need to start by getting a code reader that will read codes properly. And eventually you'll need to know fuel pressure. No need to throw parts at it just start there. Also in the 6.0 section you'll see a Tech Folder at the top. There is a no start check list there. Great info there as well.
The items in question here is if it is fuel related, to eliminate the fuel pump first, as it is the easiest to replace. If its good, then check the Icp sensor, it tells the computer readings from the hpp (high pressure pump), if that is good, test the Ipr (injection pump regulator). If they all pass. check for leaks at the o rings on the lines going to the HPP. The HPP has to create at least 500 psi during cranking to signal the ICP to tell the PCM to tell the FICM(fuel injection control module) to fire the injectors. This is most easily done with the IDS, and mostly u have to go to a dealer or to a diesel shop because an IDS and laptop run about 4500, I know I bought one. You may just need a reflash after a failed cam sensor, and since u also did the crank sensor, the computer wants a reflash to know where that cam is,
