I have headers that I'm sure are not leaking.
It sounds like a header leak under acceleration.
I changed the egr tube and still the same.
Sounds like its under manifold. Can this be?
I shot a little oil in the throttle body hoping for a puff of smoke,
but nothing. Air injection pump is disconnected.
Any thoughts?
Thanks
Are you sure its an exhaust leak and not a tapping lifter? I would take a small rubber hose, like a vacuume hose and use it like a stethiscope, put on side in your ear and the the other poke around and see if you can hear where its coming from.
Did you plug the holes in the back of the head from the smog if its removed? Also check the collector where it bolts to the rest of the exhaust. Could be a sticky/noisy lifter as well but that noise usually comes from the valvecover area. Let it cool down to where you can touch the header with your bare hand. Fire it up and quickly feel around with your hand, you will instantly know where its leakin from if anywhere by the feeling of hot air rushing out. Good luck!

I pulled the belt off so i could feel around for leaks , but the headers are not leaking.
I have plugged off were air inj was when headers were installed. I have run synthetic since new in 96 and always changed oil at 3k, that makes me think no to lifter. It sounds like an exhaust leak when revved up under load, but more out of center under intake, thats why the question about intake.
thanks
well mine were the same deal, about a hour of messing arond and it sounded like open headers and my collectors where tight so i took it to an exaust shop and turns out the collector on the pipe was way way to small they had to almost double the size of it for it to fit right...
