So I am looking at installing the dieselsite cooling filter system on my 2002 Excursion. right now I have a manual temp probe gauge in the port that the filter system goes to. Here is an example pic of the approximate probe size that I have on my gauge:
Do you all think it is fine to have a "T" fitting from the water pump outlet so I can have the coolant flow straight through to the filter system and have the probe sticking down in the path. Hope you all can visualize this....
there are three holes in the filter housing. could it be placed there rather than pluging the third hole up?
maybe that will help to show when the filter needs changing also?
good thought - would that be too far from the thermostat? Would there be a significant cooling between the water pump and the filter? (I am not an engineer and do not know about fluid cooling over distance in metal/rubber/etc)
I put my mechanical gauge probe in the filter housing and it reads just above 190. Since the engine is at operating temp I don't think the coolant is going to cool much between the pump and the filter. One thing to note about using the filter housing: my probe wire was just barely long enough to reach from the gauge to the housing. My gauges are mounted above the radio, fyi. - Brian
I'd utilize one of those ports in the housing somehow, been thinking of doing the same thing. You just need the proper adapter fittings for that probe connection and you'll be good.

Thanks

The dieselsite filter base has two extra ports to add a temp sensor if you desire.
I mounted mine in the head of the coolant filter. I am running a 189* thermostat in mine, so my temps at the filter head are usually right at 180*
One note of caution when installing the probe in a Tee off of the pump. The probe you have in the picture is pretty long. Make sure the probe doesn't restrict the flow too much. You may have to put in an adapter to make the probe sit back out of the tee a little bit. Also you may find that a tee will interfere unless you install a 30* or 45* fitting at the pump. I looked at all that when I installed mine, so I decided to go with it in the filter head since the port is perfect for it.
Here is mine with a Autometer sender (on edit: HA HA Same picture as above......great minds think alike)
