Best spots for temp probes?
I have a coolant filter and think that there's enough flow through it to give an accurate reading if I install the probe in place of one of the plugs on the housing that holds the filter. This would allow installation without having to alter anything except changing from a pipe plug to a bushing and running the wire. Does this sound like a reasonable point for the probe?
As far as oil temp, I am not sure yet where I want to locate the probe. I have a ESP pre/post luber system that I will be installing but it has no flow most of the time so placing the probe inline anywhere in that system will not work. The ESP uses a replacement oil drain plug that is like a tee fitting with one side being the suction port for the system and the other used as a normal oil drain point. Once the replacement oil drain plug is installed it is not removed, only the pipe plug off one side is removed to drain oil for normal oil changes. I could drill and tap the replacement oil drain plug to accept the temp probe. Would a probe located at the oil drain plug give an accurate indication?
I am also thinking about a bypass oil filtration system, which would be another likely point to install it. Placing a tee fitting at the filter housing and locating the probe in the side leg would give a fairly accurate reading, wouldn't it?
Anyhow, those are my thoughts on where to place the probes. Any input is of course welcome and appreciated.
but seriously i would recommend placing the coolant temp probe in the block. theres a plug on the drivers side that you take out and install the sender. as for oil temp the easiest would be to replace the oil filter housing on the top of the motor with a billet design that has a threaded hole ready for the sender built in you can get it from elite diesel
"water temp: the plug for this is little trickier. this is also drivers side rear of engine and mine was a female 8mm hex plug below exhaust mainfold and near freeze plug. be sure you have the correct adapter for the sender as it needs a seperate adapter from what most gauge will give you. you will need autometer part #2268 found here http://autometer.com/cat_accessoriesdetail.aspx?vid=58 that convers your 1/8" npt sender to metric 16x1.5 threads be sure to have the new one ready to go before removing old as it is a lake of coolant"

I got the Autometer adaptor(part #2268) and installed the temp probe in the block as Raptor131 suggested. It was a fairly easy install and I did spray the plug with PB Blaster a day or so ahead of time just to be sure it wouldn't be trouble.
I poked a small hole through the boot for the tranny shift cable and fished the wire up through it, routing it up under the dash to the terminal strip behind the fuse panel cover. I already had all six inputs to the selector switch wired to the terminal strip so all I had to do was land the incoming wire. I used some small diameter wire loom from the probe to the boot to protect the wire and spade lug on the end.
When I went out after the install was completed, I watched the OEM dash gage and compaired it to the temp gage. When the OEM needle was at the bottom mark(C) the temp gage read about 140*F. At normal operating temp the gage was reading around 185*F. It went up slightly when I was stopped at a light, maybe up to 190*F.
As far as oil temp, I will be getting a bypass filter form Oilguard and installing it in tandem with the ESP luber. I will install a fitting at or near the billet oil filter cap and place the probe there.
Once again, thanks for your help and input guys.

Bud, that's interesting. Does anyone else have any experience with it located at the filter cap or alternate locations for the oil temp probe to be located?
