alternator bracket?

will grinding the tabs off the alternator and making a new strap for the original bracket really work?

so if i were to get the regular bracket i would have to do some modifications? I will be putting my wide pulley on the alternator.

I'd go with the eBay piece you linked if you are using wide belts, and be sure to let us know how it fits. As you can see from those threads, there was a lot of interest in making it work with wide belts.

slingshot alt brackets

Well if u read those old post, you can see there are some issues and questions that came up. I researched the crap out of it and never did find one that was right. Most people I talked with, ended up shaving down the alt. and the spacer where the bolts go through. I saw a couple guys that modified the original gen bracket or made their own. And you can buy a alt. and bracket together from Macs or Dennis Carpenter for some $$$. I got mine from Certified and got the base shaved as I did not want to alter the alt case.

On a related note, is there a preferred GM alternator to use? I found this info from the Alan Grove website, the maker of the bracket on ebay. But I know it can't be this easy. There has to be a thousand applications for GM alternators, and it's doubtful I can walk into my local parts store and ask for a 10si alternator without the kid behind the counter giving me the deer in the headlights look. And what is the difference between a 10si and a 12si?

which gm alternator

The 10 and 12si have the same bolt up. Just a matter of deciding many amps you need. You are correct about the blank looking parts kid. Heres the site I used to learn about the differences. I bought a 12si. I think for a 1985 Pontiac.
