Which bracket did you buy and from where? The slingshot type keeping the alt in the original generator location, or one that mounts it to the side? I bought the slingshot one from Patrick's years ago and never had any problem with it.
i got the slingshot, but i had a pully from old gen on it. i called the place( midwest early ford ) and ordered the pully they have. he said it would line up. waiting on it now. still will need a belt ,the 5/8 type. hope napa can get one. it looks like 4 inch's longer. thanks for getting back. what did you do on belt?
I bought the whole set-up from Certified auto Electric (bracket, alternator, and belt). The belt is a Gates 53515, I think that means 53-1/2" long. (I assume you are using the two narrow belts?)
i have the stock belt on the fan and gen. i hope to use the 5/8 size on the alternater. i just need it to be longer. thanks for your info and for the reply. i will check that belt number out. tracy

Mine worked out perfectly with the stock 5/8 belt that napa had for the generator/water pump belt (I don't have part # though). I didn't have to get a longer one. I can see how the wrong pulley would misalign the belt, so hopefully the new one will fix you up.
i put the new pully on and it was further off then the old one from the gen. so i put the one back on and used a narrow belt. it's about a 1/4 off. so i called early ford and told them about this and they said they have never heard of this trouble before. he said they have never installed this themself before. i told him they needed to try product before selling it.he agreed and said to send them the pully back for a credit. ( will cost me 8 bucks to ship ) 8 from 17$ think i will just keep pully. i ran truck and went for a ride and belt stayed on.might machine a 1/4 off spacer and end of alt. so i can run the 5/8 belt. thanks tracy

ok, new news. i called sacramento vintage ford in california. told them what is going on and told him what the bracket look's like.he said their's has the offset on it so this won't happin. so i ordered it . will let you know how it goes. but he said i will still need a longer belt. thanks for all reply's. tracy
When you buy a slingshot, the dealer needs to know what alternator you're using, if you're using narrow or wide belt(s), and which year of flathead it is, or nothing will line up right. It sounds like Early Ford just doesn't know what they're selling.......For as much trouble as this has been for you, you could have made your own!
i recived the bracket from california, i gave him the year, engine size.and told him off my trouble with pully,s not lineing up. i got the new one tuesday and it is the same as the one i already have.i called him and now i am returning it . so i am going to machine some off the alt. and spacer to line them up. thanks for your input. tracy
Which alternator are you using? It sounds like that is what is different about your set-up. Also, are you using a stock '49 intake manifold (I'd assume it's an 8BA or 8RT)?
the alt. is a stock chevy alt. and the motor is the 239. the man had it for 35 years before i got it from him. he said as far as he know's the motor never had the intake off. i am up for suggestion. thank's
Take a look in my gallery under "1-wire alt". This is the model of GM alternator you need to be using. There are many GM alternators that will not work.
Your intake should have "8BA" or "8RT" cast into it, and have the draft tube and oil fill tube at the front.
that,s the alt. i have. it was only 3/8 off with the pully i am running.i took the alt. and spacer to work today and machine that much off the spacer and the thick part the 3/8 bolt went in. ( i know maybe other people say that might be wrong) but it lines up perfect now.i sent that other bracket back to cali. today for a refund. if i don't tell anybody they can't tell it was done that way. thank's for the help. and nice pic. in your gallery. tracy
