May buy this so, the owner not knowing anything about other than it runs ok, but leaks oil, and is inspected: V-8 engine.....but he doesn't know size. What might be in there? How to tell which it is? Auto tranny.....no clue what it is either. Same how? Been used as work truck. It's a parts truck since he doesn't want to find the title but it's dirt-cheap!
How cheap is dirt cheap? I don't buy anything that doesn't have a title. The motor should be relatively easy to determine. Most engines I've run across have the engine size on the intake manifold. Example: 5.0 (302), 5.8 (351) ect. There's a couple that don't have it, but if the truck still has its stickers it may have the engine size if it hasn't been replaced. Since it's a year older than my F150 I'd assume it would have E40D automatic tranny and either a 5.0L or 5.8L.
Are you going to use this as a parts truck or as a daily driver?
You probably have a AOD or C6 Transmission... The 88 F-250's came with the C6... You either have a 351w or 302 engine. You can usually find the factory build sticker under the hood and it will tell you. As I recall they actually stick them to the under side of the hood. There are tons of 88-90 F-150 F-250 and F-350 trucks that got the "Ford Fuel Injection" on the manifold. A 5.8L 351w would be a better truck engine than the 5.0L v8. The 5.0 likes high rpms and is better suited for family and muscle car applications.
As far as the title goes... You can make a simple trip to the DMV with the owner have have all the paper work done to reprint and transfer the tile in 20 mins less you wait time in line. Well that's how it is here in Iowa... You might just want to call and talk with the DMV... Untitled trucks are a pain to retitle later...
As far as dirt cheap... IDK... if you use it for parts probably worth the $300... I'd wave $250 cash in his face and say take it or leave it...
all you need is a bill of sale in the state of texas with the registerd owners dl number the vehicals vin number license plate number how much you paid or the vehical and the registerd owners signature along with yours and can get a lost title, also it helps to get it notorized it only costs about 5-10 dollars. about 75% of the trucks 87-96 had a
5.0(302) some had 5.8 (351) and some lucky guys got the 4.9 (straight 6) it its the orginal tranny its the E40D but I do know ALOT of people that has put C6 in these model trucks but even with no title if its cheap enough and runs good enough then itll be a good deal because ive found trucks not running for about 500 with a title and just fix it up with the parts truck. the oil leak problem wouldnt be to bad even if its the rear main seal so i would highly consider it
PS if you want to know what the stock tranny and engine are you can post a picture of the door tag and we can tell you what it came with from the codes on it...
I haven't seen the beast yet, but might take the drive to look/see. I have no desires to 'fix' the thing, but having an engine to play with would be fun. Of the 302/351W which has more speed parts available?
Might be that some of the OEM pieces/parts are usable.
alot of the 302 and 351 parts are enterchangable they are about the same as far as perfermance parts but the 351 will have alot more power and torque as far as bolt ons go but if your going to bore the motor out the 302 is also a good choice because parts are ALOT cheaper
nstueve no offense sir but ive interchanged ps pumps, water pumps, alternaters ect, ive also interchanged manifolds as well as other misc parts i guess alot is the sight of the beholder
Water pumps, alternators are cheap to buy at a parts store... and unless i'm missing some thing most the Ford ps pumps are just about the same... Interchange ability for wear and tear items is easy when they are all the same and still sold at the parts store... 5.0 and 5.8's are differnet from the intake all the way to the crank, and in some cases all the way to the pan... it's not as if you can change the crank, cam, pistons, rods, valves, rockers or total heads... AND, I don't know why you would want to go to all the trouble of a 5.0 intake and maniflod when it would take more time than it's worth... You might as well go get a gt-40 set up and add the HP if your going to refashion the 5.0 intake for a 5.8!
The one point i will give you is that 5.0 parts are cheap only because of the mass quantity of 5.0's that are out there compaired the number of 5.8's that were produced...
