I am having problems with my 1988 F350's fuel tanks. I was told by the PO that the front tank doesn't work and is full of old nasty fuel. He doesn't know what's wrong, he just knows it doesn't work. I plan to drop it and replace the old tank, but how do I troubleshoot it? Is there a way to test the switch and sending unit?
The rear tank is fine functionally, but the gauge either occasionally works or always reads full. Is this a grounding issue?
On an 88 it would be a short to ground to make the fuel gauge go to full.
An open or lack of ground would make the fuel gauge read empty.
You may also have the wrong year sender in the tank.
You need to replace the tank, sender and pump (one item), fuel filter and maybe clean the selector valve.
I gotta couple problems with the gage on my truck and was told it could be the ground but I can't seem to find it any idea where the grounds are for the sending unit?

Sure it is located on the LH (drivers side) radiator support.
