My check engine light came on so I took it to the shop to get the computer reset. It came right back on after driving the vehicle approx. 50 miles. So I tried to reset it by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes which worked for about 50 miles. Anybody have a similar problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
My EGR fix was warranty work so I am not sure what they actually did. I believe the work was directly on the valve.
First thing to do is make sure that you have vacuum to the EGR valve. Next, I would make sure that the EGR valve is working properly. If the vacuum does not seem proper, then it could be the EGR solinoid acting up. I believe it is what allows the vacuum pressure to actuate the EGR valve.
EGR is not the only thing that can make the light come on so you may want to take it to a shop and let them put it on the computer before you attempt the process of elimination theory. Good luck.
Check engine lights come on for many different reasons. Before you replace EGR components and PCV valves I would recomend scanning the computer for codes. Even if there is a code for the EGR system you still have to diagnose the code. Most Ford EGR systems have differential pressure feedback sensors. In my experience this is what most commonly fails on Ford EGR systems. You can tell this by looking for a rubber hose/hoses that run from the EGR tube to a little box with wires. If the hose has a bunch of white stuff in it, it is probably bad. The proper way to check the DPF sensor is by varying pressure to it while at the same time looking at datastream from a scan tool. You should see EGR percentage/position changing.
CSK is right have your dealer check it out if it is still under warranty...I had a similiar problem with the "Check Engine" light and the "Overdrive (OD OFF)" light on the column flashing. This is on our '01 Expy.
Occassionlly it would come on and go off. Eventually it stayed on, and then the "OD OFF" light started flashing, when this happened the truck appeared to have some sort of transmission problem, and was running extremely bad, unable to move. The problem happened twice and was towed in twice. The dealer could not duplicate it the first time, replaced a fuse and sent me on my way. It happened again after about 100 miles.
The second dealer found that the wiring harness from the engine fuse block was defective and causing a short. It controlled not only the ETC but also the O2 Sensor, causing fuse #15 to blow. This caused alot of headache and heartache until it was fixed. Have them run diagnostics on the truck and let them brainstorm. Better safe than sorry...
