Is a 16 axle code an 3.73 open?

I think it is since H6 is a 3.73 LS and the 3.31 and 3.55 rear ends are paired 1 and H, but just wanted to check. This would be for an 06 Expedition.

I also officially join this forum today with the purchase of it. I sold an Explorer and an F150 so I retire from those forums and move here.

Although my rookie post was met with the forum equivalent of a bronx cheer, I'm still glad to be here.

Two digit axle codes for your generation SUV:

First char - 1=open, H=LS
2nd char - 5=3.31, 6=3.73

I'd like to think this whining and demanding attitude of your's isn't going to be prevalent in all of your posts to come.

I don't have any more complaints vehicle wise at the moment. So hopefully for me and everyone else it will stay that way.

2014 Expedition with axle code 16

Hello,
I'm new to this forum. I came by this forum and subject while looking for my 4th expedition and I had some questions about towing capabilities. I'm thinking about purchasing a 2014 Expedition EL Limited. I do not believe it is equipment with the HD towing package, but it does have an axle code = 16 (3.73). Does code 16 alone allow to tow more than 6600lbs?

Thank you for any help on this.

My Navigator has the tow package, and the 16 diffs, open, 3.73 ratio, and i tow a 6800lb trailer with it, struggles on the steep hills, but overall tows the trailer quite well for the power output and size of vehicle! I would really like to find a limited slip 3.73 rear housing to swap in, would make winter driving better I’m sure!

The 3.73 axle ratio alone will not allow you to tow anything over 6000 lbs. per the Ford RV & Traler towing guide: https://www.fleet.ford.com/resources...TTgde_Sep9.pdf

You need the Heavy Duty towing package.

Thank you for the input. My new trailer weighs 7400lbs. I'll keep looking out for a slightly used expedition with the HD tow package. So far kind of hard to find.

Would anyone know what else is needed to get to the HD tow package, for example, if I found one with an axle code of 16 and installed a larger transmission cooler, would be good? Are there other options required like transmission gear shifting, sway bars, etc.

Thanks,
Surfdag
