Question CPS Symptoms??

I went to International to buy an $80 cam position sensor, but was talked out of it by a tech there who said the CPS usually starts crapping out after the engine warms up.
My problem is just the opposite. It starts normal in the morning (20-35 degress), and runs fine until the temp guage just starts moving. Then, it will start missing, under any throttle condition, even on cruise control. This is rough on a 5-sp w/ 4.10's.
When it's acting this way, more throttle just accenuates the problem.
I only seem to have to run it for 3-5 miles, then shut it down for a few minutes, and it runs great the rest of the day. It's only the first 5-10 min. I have this problem.
I've tried 3 different brands of fuel, Power Service conditioner, fuel filter...
When it isn't acting up, I am just as happy as the day I bought it!!
Am now looking for almost anyone but the local Ford dealer to check for error codes, and, hopefully point me in the right direction.
You got ideas? I'm listening!

CPS Symptoms??

I believe Autozone will scan your truck for codes for free.

CPS Symptoms??

Most times there are no symptoms for a crapped out CPS -- sometimes they just quit, sometimes they'll cause the engine to die then when you pull over it will start back up again, there is no real rhyme or reason to it, and they hardly ever give you a code in the computer. If I were you, I'd buy the cam sensor from International, try it to see if it cures the problem and if it dosen't, keep it in the glove compartment with a 10 mm wrench because you are going to need it sooner or later anyway.

CPS Symptoms??

Hose Dog, I am sorry to hear that your faith in your Ford dealership is such that you would contemplate taking your truck to Autozone for a code scan. Autozone sells parts and they will sell those parts all day to you, if you let them. Ask them when they tell you that it has this code and it needs this part, if it don't fix it, will they take the part back for exchange on the next stab at it. A code is only the start of proper diagnosis, there are many causes that will not turn the check engine lamp on. If the light is on there are many reasons why it could be on. I agree with Joe, Cam Sensors do fail at a good rate, and can cause different symptoms, and may not be a bad place to start, but I have seen scenario's that alot of parts($$) were replaced because of a bad wire connection, chaffed wire, or just the wrong part was replaced because of the lack of proper diagnosis. Its your dice, go ahead and roll them. Good Luck.
