I'm thinking about regearing my '98 E250 5.4l work van with 4.56 gears. What are my options as far as correcting the speedo? I also want to prevent any shifting issues that may arise from having a different ratio from stock.
Only part to that is the 1998 model. Most of the programmers do not have the adjustments for our years and started in 99. I only skimmed the link you posted, but did not find anything to say it would not work. I sent them an email asking.
If you read in the forums then speedometer correction is as simple as going in to the dealer.
The first dealer I went to charged $65.00 to make the correction, oops, called me back and said they could only correct up or down 1/2 inch (not helpful with 35s). No work, so no charge.
The second dealer said they could correct up to 35" and it cost $95.00. After dropping it off, they called, I came back, paid and drove down the road. And immediately realized the speedo was still off by the same amount. Drove right back to the dealer to tell them and the first thing they say is here is your money back.
I, of course, don't want the money, I just need the speedo corrected. I am not given access to the wrench, no one will go for a test ride, just take your money and go. And I did.
I called a company that specializes in speedo gears. Told them what my set up is and it took about 15 seconds for him to say I needed a 17 tooth. Got one and put it in. Now Im good to go.
Hypertech does not have anything that will work on a 98. 99+ models
On most of the van we have tuned the PCM controls the speedo output which means we can correct speedo, gear changes and shift points. Find your PCM code and email me and i will pull it up to confirm.
