My dad's '04 has 85,xxx miles and has been doing the rear end shutter for probably the last 15,xxx. We are curious to know if we can convert the LS to a open and save the cost of replacing the clutch pack.
I'm sure it can be done. He could get an open unit from a bone yard, same ratio of course with fewer miles maybe, and change it out. I would be sure to replace the axle bearings too, There are probably containates in the oil.
I was hoping to be able to do it with out pulling the carrier and resetting the gears. also, keeping cost low. the truck is 4x4 so he is not too concerned about going to an open diff.
do you think the friction modifier might need re-done? I forget what miles ford recommends fluid change out. sounds to me like either your gear oil is low (probably not) i think i would not want to lose my ls. I would try re-filling with fresh gear oil and modifier i think they call for 4 oz. Ive got the opposite problem in my 08 sd mine wont lock up half the time. Im guessing your getting chatter on sharp turns, that is usually an indicator of not enough modifier. you guys didnt change out fluids at some point and not add the modifier did you? just an idea
I don't think Ford recommends changing the axle fluid but I would do it somewhere in the range of 60-80k on the truck. It certainly wouldn't hurt to try that before looking fr a new axle.
You could change the fluid, and the friction modifier. I usually add Lucas oil treatment mine @ a 50/50 ratio with the gear oil. It's worth trying unless your unit is toast.
My 02 wasn't making the normal shudder sound but more a rubbing noise. I added 1/2 bottle of friction modifier and noise is gone.
I pretty sure under severe service, Ford recommends diff fluid changes. What climate isn't severe service? Especially mine with temp extremes from -40F to 100F.
