The other day, when I got to work, I got out of Big Red and went to lock the doors with the key fob. All of the sudden the horn just started blaring. I disconnected the batteries just to keep it from making noise so I could try to figure out what was going on. I pulled the fuse for the horn and reconnected the batteries. No more horn.
I had the fuse checked and it was good. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem is? The truck doesn't have an aftermarket alarm. Just whatever it came with from the factory.
Was the horn constantly going like "Hooooooooooooooonk" or was it like the panic mode from the fob where it sounds like "Honk..Honk..Honk..Honk..Honk"?
When it first started going off I thought it was because of the fob. I tried pushing both buttons and nothing happened. I tried turning the key on in the ignition (that used to work on my explorer) but that didn't work either. It was a constant honk. The fob doesn't have a panic button.
I've heard of these trucks having a short in the steering column, possibly where the shifter rubs through a wire. Someone else figured this out by using the tilt to move the steering wheel up or down and the problem went away. If you try that and it makes the horn stop then you know the problem is a short in the column.
Only other thing I can think of is that you possibly have a short in your ECM or whatever it is called now.
A fuse would not cause the horn to stay on. A bad horn switch in the air bag, shorted clockspring, shorted wiring, sticking horn relay or sticking vehicle security module switch would be the likely causes. Since it only did it when locking the doors with remote the vehicle security module or horn relay would be the greatest suspects. The cheap test would be to swap a known good relay for the horn relay and see if it does it again. If it happens again and while using the fob, you can probably count on it being the security module.
