Just wanted to intraduce myself. I just picked up my F250 4x4 dana 60 front and rear 4.10 gears. Thetruck is a work in progress, had a 400M in the truck and I need a new power plant was looking at a 390, or a 300/6
I will be more then likely asking some questions and look forward to getting help.
Welcome to FTE, a lot good people and good information here. If you get stuck on anything or have a question just ask, someone will be here to answer.
Sounds like you've got a good start on a project.
Post some pictures when you can. We all LOVE truck ****.
Welcome to FTE. I would say go with the 390, great engine, but if you want more than 10 mpg. and lots of power, go for a diesel like persay a Cummins 12 valve....
1. I can get a 390 from a 76 f250 wrecker runs but needs a good tune up or valve job it is a 4x4 so the trans and transfer case should bolt to what I have in the truck.
2. I can get a 78f2504x4 400 modified and it has a c6 and a dana 60 front.
I already have the 60 front on mine, but another one would be nice.
3. 78f250 4x4 witha 300 six, 4 speed, and its rebult.
I need alot of parts like radiator, frame mounts, and bed, along with good tires, so I guess I just need to decide on the combo, was woundering how the 4.10 gears would lik a 300, 400, or 390? tires would be in the 33 or 35 inch range.
thanks guys.
Scott
Oh how can I post pictures of the beast in progrss?
Hey Welcome to the forum. What are your plans for it. You might want to check ebay & craigslistcrawler an see what engines you find on there. What bout something like a 302 or something like that for it?
Welcome aboard! You say the truck had a 400, so there is no engine at all right now? As mark a had mentioned the 400 shares the bell housing bolt pattern with the 429/460. Thats the route I would go, infact thats what I did on my truck and couldn't be happier. The other options mentioned are good too but I'm kind of partial to the 460s.
One thing to keep in mind if you want to go with the 6. Since the 300 is longer than the 400 the motor mount perches that bolt to the frame will need to be moved. When the 351m in my truck gave up I was going to drop a running 300 that I had into it. When I ran into those perches being in a different spot I just went with the 460 since I didn't want to put a bunch of effort into an engine I really didn't want in the first place.
It looks like you've got yourself a wonderful project vehicle that'll take some blood, sweat and tears to rebuild... not to mention, a few busted knuckles as well, but I'm sure you've got the right direction to make your truck into a beauty.
yep no engine in the truck now, I am thinking the 78 w the 400M would give me all the parts I need for the swap. Just have to drive 400 miles to get her. would like to find something close to central wisconsin.
