fan shroud q

Well..while I'm getting the finishing parts for the install..I was contemplating my fan shroud. I don't have one and never had one for my 360. Now I have a 300/6 but I'm keeping the 360 rad..do I just find the shroud for the 300 or a shroud for the 360? Or is it even necessary to have one?

I think it'll be a wait-and-see situation with the shroud. I mean, the 360 rad will likely have extra cooling capacity over a 300 rad plus the 300's fan may not be in the same relative position to the radiator as an FE. I believe it is best to wait until after the installation and mock it up to determine what other parts you may or may not need. Heck, you may need a longer spacer to get it even close to radiator to generate some vacuum through it.

For optimum cooling efficiency however, a mechanical fan should be up to halfway into the shroud with the blades no closer than one inch from the shroud's opening.

cabby, It's not necessary. Been using the trucks since new. There are a few things that I have found over the years, they will not sit & idle for an extended period without the temp going up, they need to be kept moving. If you are in heaving summer time traffic and are having extended sitting idle it up 12-1600 rpms til you can get moving again, or shut it off.

It doesn't take much air to keep the temps where they are supposed to be.

All 1968/76 F100/350 360/390's came with a fan shroud originally. There were two different types, with or without a Super Cooling radiator.

D3TZ-8146-C (replaced C8TZ-8146-K) .. Fan Shroud / Marked on upper left corner: C8TA-S or D3TA-DA / Obsolete ~ Available from Dennis Carpenter.

Applications: 1968/76 F100/350 360/390 with standard/xtra cooling/A/C radiators (26 1/4 wide x 19 3/4" high). Not used with Super Cooling radiator.

C7TZ-8146-B .. Super Cooling Radiator Fan Shroud / Marked on upper left corner: C7TA-H or D2TA-HA or D3TA-JA / Obsolete ~ Available from Carpenter.

Applications: 1967 F100/350 352 / 1968/76 F100/350 360/390. Super Cooling radiator: 26 1/4" wide x 24 1/4" high.

The radiator support used w/a Super Cooling radiator is different than without, as it has a larger opening radius.

Is this one of the reasons I see many folks switching to electric fans?

Yes, and to free up some HP due to the parasitic drag created by spinning a mechanical fan.

I knew about the drag on the motor, but I didn't know that the temp on these motors would creep up while idling. I haven't dealt with older vehicles in a long time.
Will be something to remember when I get my truck in a couple weeks.

Greg, It's hard to say, I read all this stuff about horsepower robbing but it's a truck, who cares. You learn what you trucks wants and you work with it. The older truck will not idle with the ac on and not get hot.

I will never forgot sitting at a man's house waiting for him for 90 minutes, 98º out, the 97 Taurus sitting running the the ac the whole time and the gauge never moved. I could not get over it.

Newer vehicles are different from these ol boys.
