Thumbs up 351w in 69 stepside

im rebuilding my 351w to put in my 69 stepside i already have a welded 9" rear with 4:11 gears. i have a standard 4 speed with granny for first. im wandering the best tranny for my setup. ive heard the c6 is best but i blew 2 of them when my 351w was in my 74 swb ford. i need a 4th gear because of my 4:11 gear but i cant find an auto. should i change my rear gear or keep looking for a tranny. so far my engine is .030 over and i have a mild cam, roller rockers, headers, intake, carb. i want to stroke it but not sure if i should make it longer or shorter. any info would help, hopefully one day my 69 will run 10's in the qtr.

Buzz, What will you be using the truck for mostly? Looks to me like you are building a drag racer with 4.11 gears behind a 351W. In that case grab a top loader from a car.

You said that you needed a 4th gear, well all trannys (non under/overdrive) have a final 1 to 1 output ratio. So a 9 speed tranny will be the same as a 3 spd.

Sounds like your truck had a I-6 in it from the factory and was designed for pulling and a top speed of about 55-60 mph. Not an over the road vehicle.

C6s certainly can be built for drag racing and remain bullet proof.

Good luck on the truck.

If that were me (hopefully soon it will be) I would leave the 4spd. Unless you are not comfortably driving standard. The four speed will be a lot more fun to drive in my opinion.

But Joe, you only use three of those four gears.
