The stock bolts go through the flanges on the pipe, the plug-bolts go in the big nasty-black holes the pipe butts up to - they may not look like it, but they are pretty darn large ports, and they're threaded too, however you may have lots of carbon buildup there that both cover the thread and make the ports look smaller - time to break out that small kitchen knife you no longer need and go carbon-trimming with it, then you'll have to chase the threads cause of all the carbon buildup in there as well. And no, the bolts are not metric, but standard 5/8".
