Hey guys I have a question about some performance mods that my boss wants to do to his truck. I drive a '97 F-350 7.3 so I'm a little out of my expertise here. The truck is a '08 F-350 6.4 with 36k miles. His reasons for doing the modifications in order of importance are 1. he hates the DPF regeneration burn off with a passion, 2. he wants better fuel economy (getting about 12 right now), 3. he'd like a little more power. What I would like to know is what is the best combination of intake, exhaust and chip for this truck. He would like to delete the DPF but still keep the exhaust note at a reasonable level and also does not want to sacrifice any reliability. Voiding the warranty is NOT and issue. Thanks in advance for all the help guys, I'm just looking forward to working on this great new engine!
This could start a tuner war... but I can give you my personal opinion.
I am running 275hp Spartan Tune with the Dashdaq monitor. This tune turns the truck into a complete monster! It is also extremely efficient compared to stock. I was able to get into the 20mpg+ unloaded on the highway. I would think you would see roughly 2-6 mpg avg increase. Spartan tuning is proven reliable, efficient, and extremely powerful.
The DPF/CAT delete pipe, with the remainder of the exhaust left stock will give you a great sounding exhaust not, and not be too loud. I get complements all the time on it.
So in summary,
I would suggest:
1) Spartan tuning with the Dashdaq monitor
2) DPF/CAT delete pipe, reuse the rest of the exhaust from the pipe back
3) I upgraded to a 4" downpipe... but it is not necessary. Good for a slight decrease in EGT's, little better throttle response.
3) AFE stage 2 intake. The stock intake is awesome, and most likely not needed in your case. However, if you do some 1/4 mile races you will want the truck to be able to breathe a little better. This will also give a you a nice under the hood whistle as well as a touch better throttle response.
Just doing 1 and 2 will most likely make your boss extremely happy. The truck will come back a completely different animal. Every time I get in it, I can't believe how powerful it is.
Good luck with your decision.
I'll say the same as LaxPlaya did, the only difference is I run the S&B intake and changed out the entire exhaust from the down pipe back.. Do some research but you will see that Spartan is at the top of the recommendations list and have a reliable and proven product. He will not regret spending the money and after you drive it your 7.3 will be up for sale. Good Luck.
Agree with all of the above. I had the Banks like Senix has and liked it but wanted to get rid of the DPF, I really like the Spartan...its like a whole new truck!
