Having read many posts here, it seems that there are a few unusual steps to an oil change on a 2000 7.3 Powerestroke? Can someone tell me the procedure that you follow in doing an oil change, including anything special that must be done with the HPOP?
I start with an empty 5 gallon pale and pull the drain plug. Then I take a scratch-all and poke a hole in the bottom of my oil filter. While both are draining I go through and check u-joints, front axle fluid, rear axle fluid, transfercase fluid and grease everything. Then I pull the filter off and install new one. Replace drain plug and fill with oil. Takes exactally 4 gallons. Some people say that the HPOP oil needs changed but I believe that as soon as I start the truck, the pump sucks up the new oil out of the oil pan. Others may comment differently but I don't worry about it. If it pukes, that just means it is time for aftermarket.
Just to dovetail on what robinsonpowerstroke said, I always fill the new oil filter with the new diesel oil before installing the new oil filter. Then add the proper abount of oil to the oil fill tube bringing the level to the full mark, 15 quarts counting the new oil in the oil filter will bring your dipstick to the full mark. Remember to use a good quality diesel rated oil ( Shell Rotella , Chevron Delo, Mobil Delvac, Motorcraft PDS Oil or Valvoline Blue to name a few) You can purchase the oil and a Motorcraft oil filter at WM. If you decide you want to run a synthetic diesel oil, WM also sells Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w40. I have never used this oil, but many who do like it. Don't forget to ensure you keep your fuel and air filter changed as needed, this will help ensure your PSD runs at it's best.
