So today I got another filter in to change out my old coolant filter. When I took it off and cut the filter open I was suprised at what I saw. It was a good pile of sand layered on the bottom of the filter. I never would have thought it was like this. To me it looked bad, there could be worse, but I am so glad I have talked to some of y'all and looked around on the posts about different things to prevent failures other wise I would have never known about coolant filters, egr block offs, oil to run, parts to move around. I just installed one a few weeks ago and I'll wait until about 500 miles too or until coolant flow to degas bottle slows down. I'm kind of curious to see my results too.

When ford changed out my egr cooler I had them do a flush on it which was about a month ago...i dont think they did a full flush but ill probably do a full flush around october, I'll be driving from texas to PA so it would probably be a good idea.
haha I'm workin on buildin a big sandcastle well see here in another 500 how it looks I don't thing I'm quite ready to push it too 1000 miles haha but yeah atleast I know its workin!
Why is all the dirt in the bottom of the canister instead of lodged in the pleats which appear remarkably clean in the pic. Is this what everyone finds when contaminates are filtered from coolant? Nuder ? What is best way to cut without getting metal inside filter?
there was some sedament in the pleats but the majority was on the bottom I'm assuming that the flow pushes it down to the bottom...The sand at the bottom was hard and caked on there...I used a dremal tool to cut it open...there was really no metal shavings in there...you can tell a differance between what was in there and what wasnt..Also just to make sure before I cut it open I poured the excess fluid into a bottle and let it settle to see if any metal shavings or other sedament was in it...
Oh yeah I know what you mean. While it was in the shop having the egr cooler replaced I bought the filter and put it on right when I got my truck back home which is going to save me some money in the long run!

Out of curiosity, did the oil cooler get replaced when the EGR cooler was done? If not it looks like one might be in your near future.
Same crud that plugged my oil cooler. Had it and egr replaced and put on the coolant filter. 3rd filter opened this week after 1500 miles and still getting small amounts of the sand.
