i am writing for friend so bare with me.. he has a f250 diesel 2000 ford powerstroke 7.3 liter and has no fuel pressure would this happen if the camshift weas bad...
This is what i was told by a mechanic at the ford dealership ...
There is an electric supply pump in the tank. That is what transfers the fuel from the tank to the injection pump. I would start there and look at all the fuses to see if the supply pump fuse is blown. then from there go to the fuel filter and see if there is fuel supplied there and then go to the high pressure pump.
Ya gots ta take it one step at a time to see where the problem is.
Good luck. Let us know what ya discover.
There is no injection pump. If he has no fuel pressure on a 2000 model the first thing to check is the fuel pump relay (swap it out with another relay and see if the pump starts). If that doesn't do it the fuel pump is bad. The fuel pump is not IN the tank but bracketed along the frame rail. One other thing to check is the fuel filter. You can't run this engine without a fuel filter because there is a plastic tip in the underside of the top of the filter that presses on an inlet valve in the center of the stand pipe. If that little tip were broken off the engine would not be getting fuel into the filter. If he hasn't changed the fuel filter lately, that is not a likely cause of the problem but if the problem cropped up just after a filter change, it might be worth looking at.
Joe ,,, Why in THE HELL do these mechanics and dealers tell a person things that are not correct? Do they have to kill us if we learn something??
The pump that transfers the fuel from the tank to the engine compartment --- is it the black round deal on the frame rail about under the drivers feet? Also , is the pressure set at the factory or is it adjustable? Can it be replaced with a different pump that is adjustable? Or is there a different pump available to supply more fuel. I run the desert and around 95 to 100 mph, it seems the engine is starving for fuel. What is available?
Dealers and mechanics give people a line of crap because most people don't know the difference. When nobody questions what they say, that can say anything they want.
If the thing under the drivers feet has wires going to it, it is the pump. We used the same pump in our dyno that ford used in their trucks and we never ran out of fuel while running our engines flat out for hours on end, so I would be surprised if your pump is incapable of supplying enough fuel for your engine unless there is something wrong with the pump. I don't know if any high performance pumps are available for your application or not. The fuel pressure regulator is under the cover that is attached to the fuel filter canister where the fuel return line is attached. The guys on this forum can probably tell you where to get a heavier spring for it to increase fuel pressure.
