Hey guys, so I went out and bought a basic CB radio and antenna just for ****s and giggles. No real reason, just to have it to screw around with and maybe eavesdrop on the truck channel while on highway cruises . I installed it and ran the wires as best as I could, up to the antenna with magnetic base.
As for the power I ran the wires down to the center console, and plugged them in directly behind the power points. Here are some pix
Now here's my question, I want to do the same with my radar detector (again just simple cheapy model) BUT instead of plugging it into the "always on" power points, I was wondering where on earth can I plug it into so the truck feeds it power ONLY with the key in the ON position? Any clues?
I did the same thing on my f250. If I remember correctly I figured out which fuse was for the trucks radio and used the power. I went to radio shack and they have these things that you can connect to the fuse that you can then connect to the + wire to. No clue what they are called because I did it back in 99 when I first got the truck. hope this helps.
Ahhhhhhhhh okay. See, I DID want to tap into the fuses but I wasn't sure how the heck that would work? If you just shove a power cable in with the fuse or what. Thanks for the tips, best bet I guess is to find that special fuse with the wire.
What they are referring to is a terminal that slips on over one blade of the fuse. This terminal then protrudes out over the fuse after it is reinstalled and allows you to plug a connector onto it.
Another thought on how to grab power from your fuse block is with what we call an "Add-a-Circuit". It is a connector with 2 fuse outlets - 1 for your original fuse and a 2nd for your accessory fuse. Your stock fuse plugs into one spot, while the fuse for your accessory plugs into the other port. The accessory port has a wire coming out of it you can crimp your accessory's (+) feed into. Just make sure the fuse circuit is capable of handling the amps each accessory requires (ie. don't plug in your CB to a 1A fused circuit if it draws 3A, for example)
Finally all done! Went ahead and added a Stratus6 XM/Sirius radio that I got for free from Sirius. Thanks for all the tips guys, and ExpySport I ended up loving your idea of the "Add-A-Circuit" went that route, and it works GREAT! Got them all on the accessory fuse. Here's a few pics. I think it came out pretty clean if I do say so myself. What do you guys think? =D

Glad I could help. We use them exclusively on our emergency vehicle upfit installs, where the vehicle does not provide an accessory feed circuit, like the Crown Vic, Charger, Tahoe & Impalas do. The only real drawback to them is they are not rated for use over 10 amps, but if we need anything over that, we just run everything through a relay. Your final product looks good. Nice job!
