I pulled the engine and transmission out of my '78 just a few months back. I pulled the radiator, fan, as much stuff off the engine as possible. I used a cherry picker, and really didn't have any issues with clearance coming or going...I would agree with the other posts, pull the drive shaft first, make sure you have drained the transmission as much as possible (all of it is best). Have some buddies to help. If you can push the cab out of the way once you get the engine up, it is a lot less of a hassle.
Good luck, and have fun, it is super fun, and a great time of learning!
Pull the driveshaft first, then yank the engine/transmission.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I really appreciate the advice.
AND I've found another newbie question for you guys. The drive shaft is some kind of two piece job with another u-joint in the middle and a bearing support holding it up half way along the shaft. Is this the way all the Ford drive shafts are? I originally thought it was just a one piece deal. I guess my question is more of a curiosity as I don't think its going to be a big deal to remove.
Just as a reminder, don't forget to pull the transmission cross member. My wife fusses at me for making "crazy" comments like that, but it helps ME remember the "duh" things more often.
