Steering wheel audio controls?

Just picked up a "new to us" 2010 EL with 30k miles. It's an XLT 4x4 with leather, and the rear entertainment system. I've noticed that the cruise control switches are on the left side of the steering wheel but there's a "blank" on the right side. I'm assuming thats where the audio/video controls go on some models. Is that correct? Has anyone ever tried to ADD those controls there after the fact? Our other SUV had the controls there and we loved it.

Pop the black plastic cover off and see if there is a harness there.

No luck...

No harness. Methinks adding the controls and the harness would be more trouble than it's worth.

If anyone has ever tried this before, I'd like to get some input.

If you replaced the steering wheel with one that has the controls on it, would that work? I have a 2003 Expedition that I would like to upgrade also. It needs a new wheel so I thought if it was just a matter of getting a wheel with the controls on it I would do that.
