No worries guys, I will make sure I flip the hex shaft in the morning when I get off. I haven't reinstalled the pan yet because I was going to make sure that I had everything done right before I buttoned her back up...lol Also just to make sure, the #1 terminal on the dist will be towards the rear on the drivers side correct like in the pic?

Dist firing order /dist numbering

Tardster,

Even if you have the #1 pointing in the right direction - I think you have the wrong distributor numbering for your engine. The numbering on the cap should sequentially follow the firing order ie 15426378 counter clockwise for the 289/reg 302.

I pm'd Merc about his picture as I did not get what he was saying in the text.
He had the dist numbering on the dist cap shown for a 351 and 302HO.

Great thread by the way - I have yet to wire up my HEI dist on my 302 and was mystified. Hopefully I have got it now!

Chris

Yes you are correct, that is not the correct firing order for the 289, I do have the correct firing order. I just used the pic as a ref to make sure I had it in the right spot but thank you for pointing that out...

FIRING ORDER 289

I agree, the firing order is correct but the diagram of the distributer you just posted is wrong for your engine. Don't connect your spark plug wires according to that diagram. It should be, as mentioned in other posts, counter clockwise in this order 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8. Hope this helps
