I pulled the factory distributor on a 302 today. Replacing duraspark with Accel ignition. In the past, I have never had any trouble with pulling and reinstalling dist. For some reason, I can not get the new dist in the engine, nor can I get the old dist back in the engine. I have tried turning the dist. every possible way. I have turned the rotor and tried every gear on the dist, and still no luck. Tried turning the engine, still no luck. The oil pump shaft is lined up fine. I have even done something I never do to a dist, tap it, real hard.
I can take both the accell dist, and the druaspark dist. that came out of the engine and put them in a 289 and 302 that I have built waiting to put in cars. Both dist. go right in no problem.
When I pulled the dist out of the engine, it did not want to come out. It came off the cam gear, and we had to ****** it pretty hard to get it out the rest of the way. Could not see anything holding it in, but something was.
I built the engine and put the duraspark dist in it the first time with no problem, 30 seconds tops.
can you get the shaft out.if you can just put it in the dist, and put the whole thing in at once.you will have to make sure it,s tight in the dist.i am doubtful you will be able to get it out.if that doesn,t work drop the base.
Just be careful. Like above, you can put it in the distributor with a dab of heavy grease to hold it in or use a pair of long needle nose pliers with a tight grip and try to insert it in the pump. It's been awhile but I don't think it fall into the pan, it may get jammed. Good luck and hold onto it tight.
You might try one of those magnets with an extension handle. I'm presuming you are looking into the hole and can see the shaft end but it missed the oil pump and is stuck. I went through this once with a 289. Hmmmm.... I'm pretty sure we pulled the pan. If you do get the shaft out then the key is to one: keep the shaft in the dist. and two: When the gear engages the cam, you need to turn the crank a little to align the hex shaft into the oil pump.
