Auto Hubs
I have a 2002 Excursion 7.3 4x4. Last week i had the front wheel off looking at the brakes and turned the hub and the whole axle and drive shaft was turning. I turned the hub to the other position, and it was still turning. I thought when the switch was in the 2wd position the hubs should rotate freely from the axle. Also when I make a sharp turn i can hear/feel a thumping sound, kind of like a bum..bum..bum..bum. Im wondering if the hubs could be screwed up causing them to stay locked and make noise. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Which switch? The dial on the hub? When the wheel is on the ground turn the dial on the hub to auto with it it 2wd at the switch inside (after driving a bit) and take a big screwdriver, put it into the u-joint and it should turn. Turn the dial on the hub to lock and you won't be able to turn the axle.

I was actually referring to the selector **** inside the cab. Thank you for your help. I will try turning the axle tomorrow to see if anything has changed. Also, do you know which position is lock and which is auto? my labels are all worn off
