Front 4x4 hub problem
Front 4x4 hub problem
83 Ford F150 manual lock hubs - Right front hub is not engaging. Jacked up and can turn axle with hub lock in free position - lock in cannot move axle. All four wheels off ground with 4x4 shift lever in 4 hi with hubs locked, right hub jerks slowly and can stop by holding wheel. Hub lock has audible click when locked in and when turned to free position. Have not opened up yet and wandering what I need to look for.
Well you either need to take it apart and clean it, or take it apart and look for broken parts. Go ahead and pull it apart, then report back what you find. It's pretty simple to dissemble and reassemble, just make sure you pay attention when you're taking it apart.
Kris i speak from experience.
TTB FTMFL!!!!
I hate my independent front suspension bull chit.
I think the ford engineers were snorting chevy rust or something when they thought that a ttb would be a good idea...

Well I finally got around to pulling the hubs apart and they were a little grease packed but checked out. Audible click when locking in and out. All 4 wheels in air and all axles turn along with wheels. However I can hold the front wheels and stop them from turning when in 4x4. Am I looking at a differential or transfer case problems. Both have fluid.
You can stop both front wheels at the same time, or one at a time?
Sounds like a spider gear problem if it continues to make noise while doing this. If you can stop both tires at the same time it could still be a spider gear problem or a problem with the ring and pinion Time to pull the differential off. Too bad that takes so long to do.
Any noised associated with this? Can you narrow it down?

An open differential will lets you stop one tire completely while the other tire on the axle continues to turn. Try again but this time one tire on the ground or blocked. At that point the opposite tire should turn.
