hubs help!

I own an 86 4x4 with manual hubs. They are the original hubs. The other day I was inspecting the brakes. I found that when I rotated the tire/rotor the axle shaft would turn even with hubs in the 'free' position. Is this normal? I have heard that the factory hubs suck. Could they be shot. How exactly do they work?
A premptive thanks.

It's not really normal for the axleshaft to turn when the hub is unlocked. The factory manual hubs do NOT suck, they are simply Warns w/a Ford logo. Most likely they are just gunked up. Remove them and clean good w/brake cleaner or gasoline. Rinse, dry, and dip in ATF. A wheel bearing grease is too heavy. They basically work from spring tension generated when you turn the dial moving a sliding collar. The collar then locks the wheel bearing hub and axleshaft together.

Make sure the spring is ok behind the collar or little gear cog (whatever you want to call it). The spring is what pushes the cog out for disengaging the hub. The hardest part is getting the little retainer clip out of the groove to take the the guts out of the wheel hub.

hubs help!

I removed the hub assembly with the plastic part that is supposed to screw in/out to engage/disengage the hubs as well as the two springs on either side. But even with that out i turned the rotor and the axle shaft still turned with it thus spining the front driveshaft.
Nothing in the assembly that I described seemed to be broken.
It would seem to me that the point of free/locking hubs is to be able to turn the front rotors without rotating the axle or front driveshaft while not 4 wheeling. I am worried that since I have been driving my bronco for a while that there might be some bad wear on the trnsfer case gears. Or am I wrong?
Help!

You have a cast pot metal piece that the hub screws thread into. Did you take this out? This is held in by the clip I was talking about that is hard to dig out. Behind this piece is where the actual engaging takes place.
