so i own a 99 7.3l and a friend of mine owns a 98.5 7.3l. both are six speeds and have 3 1/2 turbo back exhaust. we both purchased the edge evolution chip, he got the on the fly and i got the plug n play. about 5k miles later my injectors went out, truck had 176k miles. my buddies truck on the other hand had made it 8k miles before losing the injectors, he only had 130k miles on his truck.
is this a common problem when chipping the 7.3L?
we had our injectors remaned due to the cost... being only 20 we dont quite have the money to by bigger injectors with our money makers sitting. we haul hay with them. My truck now has 365k miles on it with the remans and it runs just fine, but ive also added an afe intake, 12 prop reman turbo, and banks intercooler.
Hey brother first of all welcome to FTE, stick around and you'll learn a LOT about these trucks. I've never run Edge, but I know alot of guys do, and have never heard a corolation between running any tuner and injectors dying. Do you guys use the same fuel? The only thing that will really kill injectors quick is water or crappy fuel. I've run a good bunch of water through mine (crappy free fuel) and although they are noticeably a little different, thye still run pretty good, especially with my DP Tuner. I would look into a bad batch of fuel. But since that was about 200k miles ago, it looks like whatever the cause was it only happened once.
Welcome to FTE.Danny has great info there. There are many folks on here that are knowledgable about injectors and failures.Hope they will see this at the top.
Might need to run some additive like Diesel Kleen if your are having to buy dirty fuel?
i have never had any smoke...i recently installed the mid tune from a surechips and the next day i was blowing white smoke. looks like a fogger at startup but clears up after it warms up (a few minutes).
I agree mild tuning shouldn't cause injector problems....but i believe they can accelerated an existing problem.
well thanks for the warm welcome. that a first on a forum. now that i think about it, i think it was about the time california had switched over to there tree hugger low emission fuel, less soot= less fun. still fun pulling a grade with a load and come across a cummins with a id rather be cummin than strokin on the back window, and i toy with him and wait for him to take off and then i end up leavin him in a black cloud. they kept throwing codes for the injectors, so i took mine into my work, because i worked at a ford dealership at the time, and had our diesel tech look at it and he said that the went putting out the pressure that they were supposed to. then when i put the new injectors in i didnt know that i was supposed to change the glow plug harness... so it run ruff as hell until i figured that out. the 98.5 is when they changed the body style but it still has the smaller turbo from the 98.
mine blew white smoke when the turbo went out, lost the seals, i let my ex drive it while her truck was in the shop and she went over 15k miles on the same oil. the only reason i found out is she said it wouldt start so i checked it out nd when i popped the hood the was a puddle of oil under the turbo. and it had less than a gallon of oil in it... i was pissed to say the least

OK, there are no '98 PSD. What your friend has is an Early '99.
If they said the injectors were not putting out the psi they were supposed to, then it is not the injectors that are bad, it's the HPOP that supplies the psi to the injectors.
The harness is reuseable. You don't have to change it unless there is something wrong with it.
on his reg it says the 98 was made in 02/98 and i have anothr buddy that has one with an auto and it was made in 11/97... they both dont have the powerstroke emblems on the door instead they have them on the fenders like the tritons. ill see about getting some pics

There is no way the Ford dealership could have bench tested the injectors to see if they were bad. Dealerships do not have flow benches.
Any codes for injectors are electrical codes, not codes that will necessarily indicate a physical problem. In fact, most injector codes are thrown for problems with anything BUT injectors.
Hate to say it, but I think you and your friend both got ripped off by bad diagnostics.
he took his to a diesel perfomance shop that his friends dad owned i dont know what they had said the problem with the injectors were but his for sure was the injectors. but like i said after i changed the injectors and the glowplug harness its ran fine ever since... my main thing about this post is i was looking at getting another truck for my fiancee and i was gonna put my chip in it and i was just making sure it wasnt a common thing and if it was wait till i have the money to chip it
I don't think calling any chip the best is the way to go on here, but I have a DP-TUNER and I am very happy with it as are a lot of people on here. Also, DP-TUNER is the sponsor of this forum we love so much.
