Neither. It is inside the transmission in the pump body. That's right behind the torque converter.

Take it to the dealer, get a hot flush, have a beer and let the brain cells equalize.

I was half way thru mine when I realized I was screwed ,, there were a lot of bad threads out there obout flushing these .. older ones did not have the temp control ,, I have done my pan and internal filter and remote 3 times and 3 pan drops .. I would have been way better with a dealer flush .. but back then the word flush sounded like a shortcut ,, they should call it a hot fluid exchange or something ??

but I am having a beer now !!

Mark, Thanks for sharing your smarts . . . would you mind drawing out a general schematic of the fluid path for the 5R110.

Fluid goes from: Pan => Internal Screen => Pump => Thermostat => ????

Did the 5R110 have the thermostat from the beginning? Is it possible that my 03 doesn't because it was introduced in a later model year?

Every TorqShift ever built had an internal thermostat.

The fluid path goes from the pan through the internal filter to the pump. The pump sends fluid to several places. One of those is the torque converter. The flow OUT of the torque converter goes to the thermostat. If the thermostat is closed 10% of the flow goes to the cooler line and 90% bypasses the cooler and goes to lube the rear half of the trans, then is dumped to the pan.

If the thermostat is open 100% of the torque converter output goes to the coolers, then to rear lube, then to the pan.
