trans fluid change

I was thinking draining and filling back up driving about 1/2 hour, draining 2nd time filling backup, driving 1/2 hour, then draining and dropping pan replacing screen, clean magnet and reinstalling pan and fill. How does that sound Oh and replacing filter toilet filter at the end as well.
does that sound like I would change most of the old fluid?

I do mine every year (about 10k miles). Drain pan, replace both screen and filter and replinish with 7-9qts. If you're goin to go thru all that trouble in 1 day might be worth it for you to just let dealership do it.

the filter in the pan is just a screen and easy to clean ,, I did what you are thinking but only after I was in the middle of a home flush and found out the tranny shortcycles the cooler when cold so I was screwed and couldn't do the normal drain and fill flush

reconsider your dealers hot flush ,, and quiz them as to what fluid they will use

I see someone has done some reading. This is actually called the cooler bypass. Part of the PCM's strategy for cold engine operation is to disable TCC until the transmission gets up to operating temperature.

Mercon SP for older Torqshifts. Mercon LV for newer Torqshifts.

Pesonally I think this is an acceptable strategy. You do not have to replace the internal screen (unless it is damaged, and then if it is - you probably have bigger issues).

You can replace about 85% of your old fluid this way. I would probably do 3 fluid drains and then a fourth drain and drop the pan. Four changes will get about 90% of the fluid. The key is getting it up to temperature and get full circulation between changes.

So it sounds like just draining the fluid and replacing it once will not cut it. I was not aware of this and glad i read the thread since I'm changing mine next week. So how many quarts of tranny fluid should I buy if I'm doing mult drain/refills?

You should ge 7-8 quarts out from a drain at the drain plug. Dropping the pan will require 8-9 quarts re-fill.

I would measure the amount you get out.

Drain it 4 times and you need somewhere around 33 quarts.

Be aware that Ford says dropping the pan once every 30k miles is an acceptable alternative to flushing. I just don't like the thought of so much old fluid left in.

Where is the trans thermostat? Is it internal to the trans case or is it mounted on the outside? Does any one have a drawing that shows fluid flow through this thing?

In the torque converter or on the plumbing that goes to the spin on filter/cooler? I guess I don't understand fluid flow path.

I was just in to visit the dealer for a hot tranny flush last week. They did the whole service for $125 total ($119.99 + tax). It's usually $149.99 but I had a $30 coupon that expired on July 31.

Draining and refilling 9 qts x 4 times x $5/qt = $180.

Seems to me you're better off letting them do it, even at regular price for the service.

I had the dealer do mine w/ hot flush. Didn't notice till I got home that on the receipt there was also 1 qt. of tranny conditioner what ever that is? I did notice a difference in the tranny performance afterwards however. For the good.

Funny you should say that. I thought the same thing but figured it was just my imagination.
