Let me just say thanks in advance, I am new to this, so sorry for any screwups in advance.
My Truck:
I have a 1978 F150 4x4 with a 6.6L I just bought this about a month ago just to hunt out of and drive around the country. When I bought the truck it had been sitting for a bout a year and had been a farm truck most its life with only 108,000 miles on it.
What I have done:
I have cleaned tank and reinstalled with new sending unit and fuel filler lines, new fuel pump, rebuilt carb, new siloniod, new starter, new plugs, and new plug wires.
My Problem:
Truck was running great drive it for about 5 strait hours with no problem, then all of a sudden started cutting out (like it was running out of gas), truck cut off, started it back up and drove 1/4 mile and started doing the same thing.
Due to the fact gas guage is not working I thought it was out of gas, about two hours later put 10 gal of gas in it, truck started up and drove it about 2-3 miles and started cutting out again, then cut off. I could start it back up and drive 1/2 mile and it would start again, as soon as it cut off it would start back up and go another 1/2 mile and on and on till I got it home about six miles away.
The following day started up great and left it running in park for about an hour, soon as i put in gear it cut up like in had no gas, put in park it ran great.
I had a similar problem for a while. Changed the coil and ignition module, that didn't seem to help. Then I changed the distributor ( had to use a hammer to get it loose enough to rotate and pull it out) and installed a Holley red label electric fuel pump at the same time. Not sure which of those two fixed it.
It could be fuel or electrical causing the problem. Hook up a pressure gauge in the fuel line by the carb and when it starts cutting out check the pressure. At least that will tell you what direction to start going.
You said you replaced the fuel filler hoses and replaced the sending unit. Doing that I assume you replace the flexible hose from the tank to the hard line, same thing for the fuel pump. If your truck is a long bed there is another flexible line mid-way between the tank and fuel pump. If the other suggestions above don't fix it check the condition of this line. If its hard and cracked it could be sucking air instead of fuel.
I had this same problem about 25 years ago. Turned out to be a clogged fuel filter. I thought I had bad gas maybe (well the truck, not me) and there was only a 1/4 tank. Seemed to run fine just sitting, so I let it run, and run, and run.....You'd be amazed how little gas gets used idling in park. Anyway, finally put new gas in and it ran rough and died out every couple of miles. Took the fuel filer out, and tried to blow through it, nothing flowing. Maybe $2.50 later, truck ran fine.
I have a new Ignition module just have not replaced it, I will put on this weekend, also have a new fuel filter to install. Will let you know how it goes.
mikeo0o0o0 yes I did replace the flexi lines at the same time I did the tank
Hope this works, then maybe I can get some advise on a few other problems, but one thing at a time.
