My friend came over with his fancy gadgets and helped me pull the 300 out of my supercab. Sadly, it died just before we got the engine out, but its still kind of a neat video.
Retrospectively, if I'd known how much work it'd be to take off the fenders form the core support I'd have just undone the front clip, but they needed to be separated eventually anyway!
ya i learned the hard way to just undo the front clip as a whole on these.. the last two engine swaps i did in these trucks i just pull the whole dog house, but dont sit it on and take if off a dozen times if you do becouse they start to loosen up and move around on ya....
sadly i still have to take mine all apart to paint it and replace the fender i got in a fist fight with at 2:00am along side the road... long story.
...so do they come off together as some kind of assembly? Hasteranger alluded to not taking the fenders off. Can the whole "front clip" come off with Fenders attached?
Yes. My understanding (having not done it yet) is that you undo the 3 bolts per side under the hood hinges, the bolt that bolts the fenders to the cowl assembly behind the door hinges, and the bolt (maybe 2) that bolt the bottom of the fender behind the front tire. Then I think there are 2 big bolts (I had to cut these off) that hold the radiator/core support to the frame.
If i'm not mistaken, I think the rest of the assembly all bolts to the core support, so it then pulls out in one big piece.
For me, I will be repainting, and I'm replacing the hood and grille anyway, so it was still worthwhile to take it off separately, though it still would have been easier to take it apart with the clip off the truck.
yes you undo the bolts at the cowl and the rad-support bolts and pull it all as one.. but have two guy's cause it is very heavy. i had to take mine off by myself once and it took me a week to recover.......LOL. thanks
If I'm understanding right you want to take the front clip off to change engines because the hoist ram took a crap ? If thats right I can't imagine why one would want to create so much extra work for such a simple fix. You can get a ram cheep at any tractor supply .
If I were pulling a engine I would pull the clip, there is like 14 bolts and it`s no work at all to take off with 3 people, and then it makes it a lot simpler for pulling the engine.
You can't pull an engine out of a truck with a hoist without pulling the core support and grille. No hoist I've ever seen goes anywhere near high enough. My hoist is brand new btw. The ram is perfect.
And its no harder to pull the engine with the core support removed than with the whole front clip, but I think it may be easier to pull the whole clip than the core support. But once either is done its no easier or harder to then proceed to pull the motor.
I have pulled and replaced motors several times with an engine hoist without pulling the radiator support. I also prefer to remove the front cap when pulling the engine. I like to take my time and not break my back.
