72 f250 360 starter problems

I've got a 72 f250 360 that I cant seem to get the starter lined up right for long anyhow. I have shimmed and shimmed, I can get it to line up, but after a time it becomes missalligned. Its not an everyday driver. I use it plow and pull out the neighbors that continually slide off our trail here. The starter ring seems to be in good shape, only one tooth missing on the whole thing! The starter is an after market. I was told that if i got an old original starter it might alleviate the problem. Any ideas!

On mine I found the problem was the bolts were getting loose, for whatever reason. What I did was get extra long bolts (5/16 coarse), shim them up with washers, and torque them down. Seems to be okay for now.

My Autozone starter aligned fine with my 390.

I think the cure is to get 5/16 bolts that are threaded all the way down the shank, grade 5+, that extend at least 3/8" past the bellhousing when everything is torqued down. There should be a washer and lock washer under the bolt head.

What I have thought of doing is using a grinding stone and grind just enough off the bellhousing to fit a (lock)nut and socket to the bolt end.

grey, How can a 3 bolt starter be misaleigned? Why are you having to shim it? You should stick the starter up run the three bolts in, fire it up and drive away.

Ya, this is NOT a chebby. NO need to shim anything. Time to put a standard, regular, off-the-shelf starter on it and FORGET IT.

That is the great thing about Fords, No problems putting any starter in any motor. Bolt it in and GO

Most of the time mine only have two (somtimes loose) bolts holding it in and it still works fine.

One tooth missing, or four, I would still get the ring gear replaced before any more break-off. The starter gear is small, therefore few flywheel teeth make contact at one time. The teeth next to the broken one will be over-stressed and probably be the next to go before long.

What exactly is it doing to make you believe it is mis-alligned?
