starter shims?

starter shims?
I just changed the starter on my 99 f-350 and it is making some kind of grinding noise when I start it up, not while cranking but when it is running. There were no shims in the old starter, but might I need shims anyway? It seems to be coming from the starter like it is not disengaging all the way, but not sure. Nothing else was done to the truck, just disconnected batteries and than pulled and replaced starter.

The access cover for the torque converter can be removed. This allows you to look up in the area where the starter gear engages the flywheel. Have someone start the truck while your under the truck looking at the engagement and disengagement process. This should provide evidence if the starter is the problem. Just an idea, I haven't tried it, only had the cover removed last weekend and noticed I could see the starter gear. I bet you end up with shims. Hope this helps, Mark
