I have a nice little 96 ranger with a 2.3 and 223,000 miles on it, and I want to give it a snortier exhaust and maybe a bit more pep. Has anyone run a weld on system with a flowmaster and 2.25 or 2.5 inch pipe? How does it sound? Did you notice any difference in power or mpg??
Installed one on mine, bent a pipe for RH exhaust in front of rear wheel, has a more mellow sound than the 40 series, better for long trips, cut off the restriction, so I have a true 2.50 system. Power/MPG? can't tell, sorry.
If you are looking for more pep, a straight through muffler is a better choice. You need to keep the pipe size fairly small to match the engine. Larger pipe might give a bit more peak HP, but the low end power and fuel economy will decrease beyond 2". Now if you can do something to really more more air through the engine, you can go with larger pipe. That would require head and cam work. A tuner can give pretty good results.
For a serious increase in power without a sacrifice in economy, there is the turbo route. The turboranger forums can provide a lot of info, but expect to shell out some cash for that.
Ok cool! Do you think if I went with 2.25 inch and a flowmaster 40 I would get about the same flow as a 2 inch with a glasspack? I just like the sound of a flowmaster better, and I don't want it to be rappy like some stupid lowered honda civic or something. I would love to do a turbo, but funds are kinda tight.

I have the Flowmaster 40 on my 99 2.5L. The shop replaced the small pipe from cat to muffler with the size of cat and new flowmaster, then reused the stock tail pipe.
Sound is deep, Power and MPG? can't tell any difference.
If I had my choice I would have put the Magnaflow stainless on, I put them on my 87 Turbo coupe and they have a nice mellow easy sound. Not as obnoxious as the flowmaster.
