Removing Shift Linkages

Hey, Im taking out my tranny for the first time, and I have everything doen but the bellhousing bolts and shift linkage. I have no idea how to take the linkages off though. I have never done it before and I do not know how to take those off. Do I somehow take them off at the tranny of in the connection above? And either way, how?

You can take them off at the tranny. They make a special tool to seperate the linkage at the nylon bushing (may be able to get it at a local parts store or rent it). I usually just use the pry bar method lol. But this can bend it if not careful. You also have to unbolt the pivot bracket from the bell houseing, unbolt the kickdown lever.

Okay so I'm going to take that nut off and try to carefully pry the linkage off? And no I have not gotten to the torque convertor bolts yet. That was actually going to be my next question.

I think they are 14mm or 15mm nuts. You will ned a thinwall depwell 6point socket for them. You will have to turn the engine by hand (make sure to unplug the fuel shut off soleniod). There is a small area on the driverside along the oilpan where you can get to the nuts easyest.

Alright I got the converter bolts out. They weren't very hard to figure out. I got the linkage with the locking clip off. I have the other one and the one that connects to the transfer case to get off still. I still have no idea how those are held on there. Im guessing they will just come apart with a pry bar like you said. Then it is just bellhousing bolts and it should be out! I did notice something that bothered me, when I turned the engine over by hand it was very hard to turn. I mean it hasn't been started in over a week but is that normal? Last time I did that it was not near that hard.

Well I had done it once before when I turned my fuel up and I dont remember it being near that difficult. And yes taking a transmission out is not fun and I am glad it is over with. Good luck on yours lol.

I have had to put 3 trannys in this truck. That was less than a year for all of them. Now I am doing a body swap and putting in a t18, hope this is the last time for a long while lol.

Wow that is not a fun year lol. Although I do think if I had to do it again I could do it in about half the time now that I have done it before.
