gear shift linkage

gear shift linkage
I started to pull automatic trans into gear, then something snapped. Now I can't pull it out of park. I think it's the gear shift linkage. I have the steering column covers off and can see the linkage. My question is, how do I get it out without taking the dash apart? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What truck are you working on? Dropping the steering column is usually your best bet, four studs with nuts hold it in place, no need to take the dash apart for it either - you will have to reove the bottom access cover for the dash tho, and removing the front trim pieces will open up more space for your hands and tools.

The '92-'96 IIRC have that stupid aluminum shifter tube that snaps about halfway down the middle of the column usually - actually passenger cars have the same problem too. You'll definitely have to drop the steering column to get to that silly thing. When you put it back together pay close attention to the three tiny wires for the OD cancel switch at the end of the shifter - those often get their insulation damaged from rubbing against different parts in the steering column, and then the transmission starts acting all goofy - wrap them with some electrical tape just as a good measure.
