I am changing clutch in 1990 F-150 5.0L and I want to remove the transfer case before I take out the transmission. I can not seem to unhook the linkage arm pins seem to be some type of tapered pin. Is this linkage arm removable or do I have to take off the entire linkage from the side of the transmission??
Sorry moderator I still do not know how to get threads in the right location so you will have to move this one also.
I would just leave the transfer case on there. I removed my transmission and transfer case together so I didn't have to mess with the linkage, and separate them. The combo is still not that heavy (I can easily pick them both up), I pulled it down by hand w/ a buddy.
Ok I got it without pulling transfer case!!!!! And I did it in between fixing my well pump. Thanks for the tips. I do have another question though as always!!! My clutch was sliping bad thats why I pulled it out but I did not damage the fly wheel. The fly wheel looks good no grooves and very little wear. I am planning a rebuild on the motor next year (150K+ on motor now )can I get by with the fly wheel like it is? It is pretty slick can I rough it up a little with my dremel and get another 15 to 20 k out of it? Should I replace release bearing and pilot bearing? How do I get the pilot bearing out if I do not have a puller? Ok that was more than one question but you know us old guys we like to talk.
I decided to change the Release bearing, and Pilot Bearing but leave the fly wheel as is since I am planning a rebuild with mods after next hunting season. The release bearing is not a problem but I am going to be a little creative with the pilot bearing. Since the end of the crank seems to have a blind hole I am going to pack the pilot bearing and area behind the bearing full of grease and then take a piece of curtain rod dowel or broom handle and turn it down too just a few thousands smaller than the inner race of the pilot bearing. Then I am going to give it a couple of wacks and see if the hydraulic action behind the bearing will push it out. I am talking to myself here but what the heck I am old I got an excuse. If any body wants to know how to pull the tranny and transfer case mono-e-mono I did it with a $44 dollar transimission atachement from northern tool,4 jack stands, cribbing, two jacks and a 1 1/2 ton cumalong.Only problem was removing the cross arm brace on the passenger side tough to hold bolts up next to frame fortunately I had an old 3 n 1 brake wrench tool that my grandfather had that was thin and fit between body and frame another Ford engineering wonder boy must of thought you did not have to change clutches or transmissions without dropping the cross arm support. Once I get the clutch and bearing changes done I am putting it back in mono-e-mono as well. Half the fun is saying I did it all by myself.
