Can someone please tell me once and for all if the damn tailpipe is supposed to be black or clean as a whistle?
I'm tired of the dealer telling me it's OK and that there is nothing wrong with it. No codes, etc... for them to look further into it.
Will an exhaust leak, say around the turbo outlet, cause a black tailpipe condition? I swear I also have an exhaust leak since it will stink up the interior of the truck while regening...
BTW, anybody want this truck for cheap. I'm just about to that point...
Yes, an exhaust leak will cause the pipe to be black. If it is black and sooty and wipes off, then its an exhaust leak. If its near the turbo or under the cab, then you are going to get fumes in the cab.
Sounds like you have an exhaust leak that would technically not pass an inspection for an exhaust system because it leaks or emits exhaust gas under the cab.
It's not ok to have exhaust fumes leaking into the cab. I don't know if you have mentioned the fumes in the cab to the dealer or just an exhaust leak, but i would say it needs to be fixed either way. I am assuming this is warranty correct? The reason why they can't find anything?
How come I keep seeing warranty repairs take forever to convince because all some techs do is check codes. If there are none, then the truck must be fine. Why would you check for codes on an exhaust leak complaint, and if there were none, tell the customer there is nothing wrong?
From the tech folder:
Exhaust leak in engine compartment:
Some trucks may have an exhaust odor inside or exhaust smoke may be visible around the front. This could be caused by a leak at the turbo outlet from a misaligned downpipe. Verification requires disconnecting the turbo oil supply tubes (replace the banjo sealing washers, W302474) and removing the turbo heat shield to inspect. If the leak is at the turbo outlet, the downpipe will need to be repositioned to seal correctly, with a new downpipe to turbo gasket (7C3Z-6L612-B) and v-band clamp (7C3Z-5A231-AC), and new nuts for the downpipe to catalytic converter flange (W711407-S900). If properly installed, the downpipe will be 11/16" +/- 1/8" from the frame rail. TSB 07-7-7
My tail pipes are clean, I just got done with a 4100 mile trip, most of it towing my 5er.

I've mentioned the fumes in the cab to them and they say it's normal for it to happen while in regen. As far as I know Ford will not let them "work" on it if there are no codes present. That and they usually can't recreate the problem...
I'm almost positive they can force a regen to simulate the problem. Don't theink they ever do it though.
Can you take the truck to different dealer? Sounds to me like you have a dealer without a good diesel mechanic or just a bunch of people that don't care. An exhaust leak should be pretty easy to find if there is one. We are not talking about a clean burning gasser here, where theres a leak you'll have some soot.
Funny how every time I come here to vent someone's beat me to it. Today I noticed that when I take off my truck black smokes like a frieght train for a few seconds, then clears up quite a bit, but its still sooty exhaust. From day 1 my truck has never had "clean" tail pipes, and after complaining to the dealer for 30,000 miles he finally replaced the DPF, saying it was cracked inside. (I dont think he really ever knew, I just think he did it to shut me up) Anyway, after that, it took only a 1000 miles before I could tell it wasnt any better. But now with 50,000 on it it's getting worse. I can put my foot in it at a light and it will puff out a plume of smoke like the solids on the Challenger, then clear up a little. If I keep my foot in it it will look like its blowing smoke but its more grayish. What could be causing this? I dont have any exhaust leak issues, smells, or anything like that. But something's not right, and Im like the OP, I'm about ready to chuck this baby. It's just not worth it if she's got all this choking crap on her and it's not doing a damn thing. Oh, btw, she passes emissions fine, if thats any help.

Noticed mine does that too. just noticed this AM. Not sure how long it's been doing it though.
Sure glad I didn't sell my 7.3. Honestly never thought the "new" diesel engine would be this much of a hassle. It's a nice truck, but not worth the money at this point.
You would think that with all the fuel injection commands and the new injector technology that a dripping injector would throw a code. Seems like a good analysis. Stupid though that they "claim" they can't find what's wrong. Who's the idiot who designed the system with codes for everything under the sun but not one to monitor fuel injectors more completely? Any advice on how best to go about checking this without breaking into a bank? Im in med school on a continuous basis to keep my invasive skills sharp and don't have hundreds of dollars to throw away at the steal her ship to find out whats the real problem.
