Ive got a question. Got a 74 f100 with a worn steering coupler. The top side of the connection is worn out too and i have found 1 online anywhere. i looked into my LMC book and it looks like it does come apart from the steering column. Would it just pull of, or would it need some persuasion from a hammer or a gear puller? Any help is greatly appreciated.
not sure I totally understand the question , but if your rag joint is wore out , go to the parts house and get another and put it in. The rag joint slides over the splined shaft on the gearbox and the other end (the rag part) bolts to the flat flange on the end of your steering column
oops just noticed the picture didnt post. from what ive seen on the web, i cant tell if what the rag joint slides into comes with it. The 2 posts that come on the rag joint go into the slotted holes on the column, the holes they slide into are wollowed out, if you can understand, im not sure if they comes with the rag joint or if i need 2 scrounge 1 out of the junkyard. sorry i cant describe this any better
The flange that the two posts slide into is part of the steering column. It doesn't come with the coupler.
Note: These "holes" that the pins fit in are actually slots.
Replacing the fiber disc or the complete coupling will take care of the slack in your steering, those pins are there as a safety back-up for when the disc fails. There is slack in the slots. It's designed that way.
Also, if you replace just the disc don't be surprised if your horn doesn't work.
When you install the repair kit, that eliminates the built in electrical ground for the column.
You'll need to fabricate a short jumper wire like in the picture if your horn doesn't work (assuming it was working to begin with).
