I am getting the old F 5 ready for it's new paint job. After a lot of thought and discussion, I finally decided to ged rid of the red that is on the truck and go back to the trucks original color green. It took a while to figure out just what the original color was because it didn't match the paint charts I found. Somewhere I read (probably here) that Palisade green was introduced on the trucks in 1950, but it was never put on the truck charts, anyhow, that is the color and I found that Martin Senor (Sherwin Williams) does have the mix codes for this color.
The grill is presently an off white / Ivory color and I thought I read somewhere that Ivory was the color that year. But I have been unable to find anything to confirm that. I have seen some old ads for the trucks and the grill looks silver on them. I found that a beige was available in 48 and an Ivory in 51 or 52. Can anyone help lead me out of my confusion?
I'd love to hear from others as well. I currently have a non-chrome grill, painted black to match the body but am restoring an original grill with the holes for the chrome. I have started removing the dent and working the base (unfortunately the chrome is shot and will need to be replaced) but would love to know the proper color to paint it before installing it. I've seen a lot of ivory but also many that match the body color.
Also since we are on colors, was the 8BA in 1950 red or gold? I've seen both.

It should be gold, the Red was for the bigger motor in the F7 & F8
My '50 was built in November of 1950, and I believe the grill color was original. The color I researched called out a Tuscon Tan. I gave the paint code to the paint supplier and he came close to what I was looking for.
According to Standard Catalog of Light-duty Ford Trucks 1905-2002, by John Gunnell:
1948
Prototype trucks, seen in many factory photos, had body color grill/headlight mounting panel, while early production trucks originally had Tucson Tan finish there, Argent silver later replaced Tucson Tan and the later trucks also had Argent Silver finished grill bars with red stripes. All 1948 models had wheels done in black.
1949
Body color-coordinated wheels and elimination of the red strip on the Argent Silver grill bare the two most noticeable styling changes for 1949. The headlight and grill mounting panel continued to be finished in Argent Silver, like the late 1948.
1950
This year's trucks were almost carbon copies of the previous year models, although minor modifications were made. The grill recess was finished in an Ivory color.
This shows the Tuscon Tan as the grill color for 1948.
It also shows the Argent Silver as an accent color for 1949-1960.
And it shows Sungate Ivory as the grill color for 1952/54
1948
grille bars: chrome
grille recess: argent tan
This is interesting. I've never seen chrome grille bars that were OEM, but I've seen plenty that were painted with stainless steel trim on them. Just goes to show all sources aren't always 100% accurate.
yeah, my '48 F1 has stainless steel bars, and my '50 F6 are rust, not stainless. The '49 F6 at my uncle's place (still ) look to be painted aluminum/argent.
The bars themselves were never factory plated, that must be referring to the stainless steel trim grill bar covers.
Somewhere I though I read the stainless trim was standard on '48s and an option on '49 & '50. I've had two factory '48's with the SS and one '49. The holes in the grill are diffenately factory punched.
Yep, One thing that is very consistent is the sources are inconsistent.
51 Grill was body color on the Standard 5 Star and Argent on the 5 Star Extra Cabs until mid year 1951 then changed to Ivory for both Cabs, 52 was Ivory for both Standard 5 Star and 5 Star Extra Cabs.
The book Bob quoted is the one I saw as well. It said the 50 grills were tha same as the 49s (Argent with no red stripes) but the recess was changed to ivory in 1950.
I painted the entire grill of my '49 the stock tan color from '48. The grill I used was from a '48 and came with the SS trim. I also liked how the tan made the SS pop. I didn't think I'd get the same effect with the Ardent Silver.
