Hey guys I've got a problem with my truck smoking too much/too often. Every time I shift (6 speed) I get smoke from the tailpipe; no matter how easy I shift it always smokes some. If I shift very VERY gently and apply barely enough throttle to accelerate I barely see any smoke but even normal driving, shifting at 2000 rpm, not even really keeping up with traffic I get more smoke than I should. It's not exactly puring out it just seems like it's not burning the fuel like it should. I've tried my Superchip on all three settings and no chip at all, it made very little difference. I know I need a wicked wheel to fix my surge but I'm driving easy to prevent the surge until I can get a wheel (I just had surgery for tendonitis and am missing some work) but that shouldn't cause excessive smoke should it? I've got 256,000 miles on the truck but when I checked the turbo wheel a while back there wasn't any play in the shaft. Could it be a turbo problem? Where else should I look? Any help or suggestions is much appreciated.
Dirty air filter, dirty injectors, oil, etc. just trowing some things out there, run some diesel kleen from walmart through it, over mix it for about three tanks, run some bio, change fuel filters. Do you have after marketed exhaust.
My filter is good, oil is about ready to be changed, injectors I don't know much about except they have over 250,000 miles on them, I used to use diesel kleen but didn't see any difference when I stopped using it so I never went back to it. I don't have biodiesel around here that I know of, it may be about time to change fuel filters though. Yes I have a 4" turbo back MBRP straight pipe exhaust.
Check for leaks in the charge air boots and for leaky up pipes
x2
About the best way for the IC boots is to pull them all off, clean them up, and go over each one looking for cracks or cuts. Clean up the IC pipes and put it back together. Make a pressure tester to check for leaks once it's all assembled. Get some PVC pipe and cap, drill and tap a "valve stem" into the cap, and clamp all that in place of the air filter. If you can get it to 20-25psi without leaks, are you doing great.
About the best way for check if the up-pipes are leaking is to pull the turbo. It's pretty hard to tell otherwise, just can't see them. If you're gonna do the wicked wheel, great opportunity to check them. Maybe look into bellowed up-pipes, with your miles I'm guessing your pipes may be leaking.
When I did mine, I just cut the up-pipes with a sawzall just to get the baby's butt out. When I went to pull the butt out, what pipe was left in it just fell out.
