Blower Motor Relay

Hi All......
1989 E150 Club Wagon, 5.0, EFI, Autotrans, 61kmiles.

Blower motor acting up.....sometimes on, sometimes off......mostly off now. For a while there whenever I would accelerate heavily, the Blower Motor would cut off, and when I leveled out in speed, it would come back on. I'm thinking maybe the thermal cutout in the Blower Motor Resistor Assembly.....but I also want to check the Blower Motor Relay, which I find on the schematic but have no clue where it is on the Van........can anyone tell me please? Also, it must go by another name because I can't find it listed in any of the parts stores.

TIA
Vaya con Dios,
Chuck, CABGx3

Not having a 1989 in front of me, for Fords generally.

The blower motor relay is a fuse.

There is a resistor pack for fan speed, about 1x3 inches, black, with a coil, on the air plenum under the hood, should have three wires going to it. One orange.

IF there is a relay, it will be on the fuse panel under the dash.

Thanks for the info, but I still feel there is really a relay somewhere as the fuze is only a 15 amp......those without a relay use a 30 amp fuze. The schematic clearly describes it as a relay. I know about the Resistor Assembly, I picked up a couple at the you-pull-it today to change out tomorrow........still need to know where the relay is located and what it's real name is.

Its called blower motor relay. I had a 91 E150 and the blower relay was in front of van inside of hood between the radiator and battery. It is a metal cased relay screwed to frame across top of radiator. It had 3 wires going to it, yellow wire came from fusible link at battery. Yellow wire with red stripe comes from dashboard. Orange wire with red stripe goes to blower. Mine failed in the closed position and killed my battery.

Many thanks firepop5, I'll check it out when I get home this evening.

Further analysis of my problem seems to indicate a bad Check Valve between the A/C Vacuum Accumulator and the manifold source of the vacuum.....now I got to find that little thing too.

Thanks again,

Vacuum controls may be another issue. I don't think the blower circuit has anything to do with the vacuum system. (But I'm not an expert, just a backyard mechanic)

Was about to add on the later 80s' the blower motor relay is indeed behind the battery on the core support. Mine was intermittant which perplexed me until it too finally failed completely also taking the battery and motor too.

OP if you need or want factory style printed manuals especially for electrical and vacuum routing head to eBay Motors and search---I have the same manuals dealers used for my model year and they're immensely helpful. If memory serves I've seen them in great condition dating back to the early 70's. You'd be pleasantly surprised how much help they can be!

Thanks again firepop5........the relay was EXACTLY where you said it would be and looked EXACTLY as you described it. Now to move the battery etc to be able to get at it.......what a really dumb place to put it when so much other open space is available.....oh well.

I also found the AC Vacuum Accumulator......in a crevice betweent he battery and the fender......there's a fitting on top of it with two hoses which may be a combination fitting and check valve......I'll have to check it further, got rained out. If the check valve is bad then when the engine vacuum goes away, as during acceleration, then without the accumulator to help, the heater system doors will lose vacuum and switch.....ie: AC will switch to heater, and come out different ports......makes it look like the blower quit working.........

Thanks again, you were a big help

Thanks for you input JWA......I just had to replace both my Alternator and Battery so maybe that is what wore them down too.......
As for the manuals, thanks for the info........I did find a worn out 1988 manual at a yard sale for $1 that helps some, but it's not all there.......I know what you mean about their help......I had a full set on another vehicle one time and it was a big help.......I will check out ebay tho, thanks
