New Hitch with pics

Well I finally put on my new hitch today. Fortunately, I have a friend with a shop and he let me use his lift. I don't think I could have done it without the lift. I had added the underbed spare mount a while back (thanks cs65) and duals before putting on the receiver. I got the receiver from U-Haul for $154 with free shipping and it seems to be a nice quality receiver. For anyone interested, it was model# 75034. I think they may have been discontinued because when I ordered mine, they told me there was a limited supply. In any event, it fit nicely with plenty of room for the spare tire. I had to drill one extra hole in the receiver to mount the spare tire carrier, but other than that the installation was pretty straight forward. I have included some pics. Enjoy!

Good eye, I wondered if anyone would notice that. It's still holding air, so I left the screw in it. I'm sure if I remove it and plug it, it will leak.

As you mention; its a screw plug I believe! lol
Nice set-up and allows the spare to be there; is even better.
I put a 1 1/2" receiver under my current project; its from a Bronco II got it for free and will only use it to haul my motorcycle trailor around.

I once drove from California to Montana and back with a screw in the tire... It never leaked.

Good looking hitch by the way. Thats something i need to do. Mine has a hitch, but its the kind where you drop a pin through it. Mine used to be a farm truck and lots of trailers around here have that kind of hitch.

Nice pics, especially the one that shows the right tailpipe. Local muffler shop cut my spare tire carrier out because they said there wasn't enough room for the tire? Now I know there is!

Thanks for the pics. I have thought someday I might get around to buying a hitch for mine.

Dan, Your's may be like mine and a little different from the one in the photo. I also wanted mine further under the truck so it wouldn't be seen as much.

I have been fortunate not carrying a spare with me all the time.

66F100 Can you cut the size of your saved photo by 60%? It wouldn't over ride the forum so much.

Here is a little different approach to a trailer hitch. I have a travel trailer with a pull hitch and wanted to tow it with my N series, but at the same time I did not want to tear the trailer up. I found this nifty air ride hitch. It has an air bag inside and you can adjust the air pressure in the bag to suit the weight of the trailer you are pulling. It sure makes a big difference.

I resized the images John. Sorry about the visual overload. I didn't know how to change the size before, but I do now.

Michelle, why would towing with the N series tear up the trailer? Stiff ride at the hitch?

John:

I'm not sure what kind of tire carrier it was, just darn old and rusty! I found an original (well I think it is) Styleside spare wheel carrier, I think I'll use it instead. Then I'll have room to mount a hitch reciever like "66f-100" did.

66 f-100,

I kept my spare padlocked like yours for years on two other Ford trucks.

When I finally got a carrier for my '66 with a new spare, I realized that if you just unscrew the eye bolt, the tire comes out!! - padlocked or not!

So, I bought a cable lock and am now using that.

The padlock wasn't really meant as an anti-theft device, it is there to prevent a "bombs-away" release of the spare onto the highway if I hit a large bump just right.
