While crawling around under the back end of my daughter's '96 Explorer 4x4, I noticed a loose hose. It's about 2-2 1/2 feet long, has a metal coupling on the unconnected end, and the other end terminates near the driver's side rear shock. Anyone know what it is?
It's a vent, one side connects to the axle, the other side is allowed to vent. Is it just hanging there so you want to know where it's supposed to be clipped, or is it clipped and just looks like it needs to go somewhere on one end? Since you said it's terminated near the shock, it sounds like that's the end connected to the axle tube.
One end is clipped to the frame, the other end is just hanging there. Where on the axle is the other (the un-clipped end) supposed to go? Please be as specific as possible. Thanks.
Yep. You may want to remove the nipple from the axle though and make sure it is not clogged. I ran in to a clogged one on my 2000. It's easy to spin out using a deep socket of the appropriate size (I think it was 10 mm).
You should be able to lift the unconnected end of the hose towards the top of the axle and get a general idea where it's supposed to connect. Check a 4 inch radius of that area and you should figure it out.
